This is the three books in the Ibis Trilogy written by Amitav Ghosh that starts with Sea of Poppies then River of Smoke and the final book Flood of fire . The series starts just before the Opium wars on a Slave ship called The Ibis. With a very mixed diverse crew on board this sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun and adventures on the high seas.
