Yoga Girl by Rachel Brathen . Review

I first came across Rachel on Instagram. Pictures of her yoga poses taken in exotic locations are the things of dreams and her popularity just keeps rising. Her book "Yoga Girl" is a collection of stories about her life , instructions on yoga practises and recipes for delicious foods and drinks. The most enchanting thing about the book is Rachel's voice , her calm and happy energy spills onto the page and you can't help but picture her smiling face as you read . It's just infectious .. in a good way ;0)
Full of inspiration and many wise words this book gives you plenty to think about especially if you are currently finding yourself at a crossroads in your life and may find yourself understanding Rachel's own personal journey in life. Mind ,body ,and soul are taken care of here between the pages and it's worth getting a notebook and jotting down some of the ideas in the book to refer back to when you need some inspiration or encouragement . A must read for an yoga fan ! A great read!

I read a library copy of this book .

Happy by Fearne Cotton . Review

I have watched and listened to Fearne Cotton for many years and always enjoyed Fearne's manner of interviewing and speaking on the radio. Reading this book felt just like what you would expect from this awesome lady , a down to earth approach to some of the tougher subjects some of us face. Depression is hard going but Fearne's way of explaining it and sharing her own experience with it made it feel less daunting and more approachable.... yes approachable.
Fearne talks to many of her famous friends throughout the book , they talk about their own mental health and strategies that helped them cope  when they had their own struggles .
Throughout the book there is areas for you to check in with yourself and do some homework , helpful hints and sound advice told in a easy to understand manner . Fearne tells of the things and people who helped her when she needed it most and how to look out for your yourself if you think you may have depression and the ways that you can practise self care.

This is a must read for anyone going through any mental health issues , anxiety, panic attacks , depression , posnantal depression I think there is something for everyone in here.

The copy I read was a library edition.

The books that I am aiming to read this week are these awesome library books. Ooh how I love the library!!!!!!( insert bookish gushing here) . When I was a kid I did not get as much access to the library as I would have liked , many years later I am making up for it and nothing gives me greater pleasure when  the email arrives letting me know that the books I have ordered have come in ready for collection . Seriously it makes my day ! Anyway enough about that, check these books out for yourself .... literally , at your local library ;0)

Healing Depression The Mind Body Way by Nancy Liebler and Sandra Moss
The Holistic Beauty Book by Star Khechara

No Way Back by Kelly Florentia . Review

This is a contemporary women's fiction / romance set primarily in London . Audrey Fox is the main character of the story , she has recently been let down by her fiancĂ© just before their wedding and has had her heart well and truly battered . But as one door closes another opens in the form of the gorgeous Daniel, business man and single father.
This was a really enjoyable story with lost love , fresh starts , forgiveness and more then a few shocks for the reader, also have the tissues handy ! I love a story that catches me by surprise and this did exactly that . Audrey was a great character , I was backing her all the way , she is a loyal friend and a good person who has had lots of horrible things aimed her way so I was rooting for her to the very end , I wanted to see her shine !
This was a one sit read for me and I can't recommend it highly enough ,sleep, who needs it anyway ;0) .I just had to know how it would end ,and if Audrey would get her happy ever after ! I loved it!

I received this book in exchange for a review . This book is being published by Urbane Publications on September 21st and will be available from all good bookshops then . This is the first book in a sequel .

Woman Of State by Simon Berthon. Review

This is a fictional account of The Troubles in Northern Ireland in the early 90's and based primarily around two members of one family . Marie and Martin McCartney are brother and sister , Marie is young and in love with a friend of her brothers and after making a promise to him her life would alter for good .
The complicated and intense history of the troubles is described well as far as any fictional account can , adding a love story to the mix humanises this time in history while showing how many grey areas of this time there was . Marie's rise from young girl to womanhood and from Ireland to the UK was fascinating to watch , the intricate plot of what was going on around her was dazzlingly brilliant , friend or foe it became hard to know who to trust , the story keeps you guessing . Fantastic!

The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce . Review

This is an absolutely gorgeous story about a man , a street , and a love of music .
Frank is one of those characters who you almost instantly fall in love with , his empathy and big heart make him an irresistible lead character who just so happens to have a talent for knowing the perfect music for any person to suit their own situation no matter what it is . This gives him an almost central role in the group of misfits who also have businesses on the same street as him , people that seem a bit lost in life seem to find their way to him and one in particular puts a sparkle back in his eyes . I loved every page of this book , it's filled with great music titles and loveable quirky characters and a lovely nostalgic love of vinyl . Read this immediately folks , you won't be disappointed.

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter . Review

The story throws us into the action right at the beginning with a present day crime at a school  then the story goes back and forth in time showing us some of the main characters past . It took me a little while to get the hang of that but I loved it. I am a big fan of this author and she writes amazing crime scenes , it really has you on the edge of your seat rooting for the good guys , this book does that SO well! I loved the fierce strong Charlie and the history of her notorious family ... it was hauntingly good ! This is a must read for all Karin Slaughter fans.

Give Me The Child by Melanie McGrath . Review

This is a deeply disturbing story about a doctor and her family . Cat is happily married woman with a great husband and a child that is beautiful inside and out , then one night her whole life changes when a stranger shows up at her door . This was unnerving for a number of reasons , the secrets and lies , the layers of deception and the sheer evilness of some of the characters , this makes such good reading ! There is some awesome backstory here and that makes the present day story even more juicy . Add this to your TBR immediately ! Loved it!

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. Review

This was one of those stories that as soon as you finish reading it you instantly start recommending it to your friends because you know no matter what type of genre they are interested in they will really enjoy this . It was SO good , I just keep thinking back over it since I finished it . A teenage girl goes missing and someone knows what happened but they have their own sick intentions and reasons to keep her whereabouts secret . This story just kept upping the surprises and levels of which the sick of mind could lower themselves further . The story is told from the perspective of a few people and I loved that! Seeing the events from opposite sides of those involved was deeply disturbing and heartbreaking , my heart went out to Ellie and her mother , and I felt a certain amount of respect for Floyd who took an unusual situation and gave it a very satisfying conclusion . I loved this book! I can't praise it enough. Everyone should pick this one up and plan a late night reading session.

The Tough Times

These are the lovely books I am aiming to dip into this weekend . The last three are review books and the only difficulty I face is knowing which lovely one to begin with .

At times , life hands you lemons , this has been a week where life has done just that , and before I can find instruction to make lemonade I first have to find my way back up on to my feet , right now it feels like I need a roadmap to even find my way to that point . Books have always been my home in times of worry , stress , and uncertainty . This is one of those times . I need them to swallow me up completely until I can come out the other side of this or until the clouds lift . This is depression and it's scary and lonely and I feel lost . If you are reading this knowing exactly what I mean then I am glad you are still here reading this with me especially on the days it seems like the clouds will never part and the overwhelming smog suffocates you to the point you can hardly breathe . Today I am taking baby steps .... for today that has to be enough .

Rook by Anthony McGowan. Review

This is the third and final book in the trilogy featuring Kenny and Nicky . In this book the story begins with these brothers saving a bird from dying . There is such raw moments in the story that really grab at your heart but then these are later replaced by moments of pure hilarity with laugh out loud remarks that their father comes out with. The story contains issues like bullying , first love , disabilities and family relationships . The boys and father  are a small but very tight family unit , each has had their own troubles in life but together they are stronger . Inspiring and heartwarming and a must read for all younger readers and parents .

Juniper Lemon's Happiness Index by Julie Israel. Review

This is a touching story of one girl's journey in the months after the sudden death of her older sister. Juniper is really struggling with excepting the death of her sister and coping with life without her there , she has lots of questions that are unanswered so when she finds a mysterious letter she hopes it will answer some of her questions , if she can only figure out who the letter was meant for .
Thought provoking and touching , this is a must read for any young person going through any kind of grief .

The Ghost Of Helen Addison by Charles E. McGarry . Review

This is the first book in this new murder mystery series featuring Psychic private detective Leo Moran . Leo is an old fashioned type of gentleman , slightly suffering from hypochondria and more then a little partial to  a nip of whiskey . I really enjoyed this story set in Scotland during winter centred around the brutal murder or a newly qualified nurse .
The story is charming , Leo is very likeable even though he can have quite a sharp tongue , but he is just the man you would want on the case when there is a murder especially as he has such unique gifts . The plot kept me intrigued the entire duration of reading it which meant I read it all in one sitting because it was awesome. The settings of the story , the hotel , train , quaint town etc all added to this stories charm . I would recommend this to any mystery fan , especially cosy mystery fans !

The Naming Of The Dead by Ian Rankin . Review

This is book 16 in the Rebus series and it just keeps getting better and better . This book primarily centres around the G8 summit in Edinburgh and a serial killer on the loose , both making the police a little twitchy. Rebus seems to be loosening up a lot since the series started , he has more of a sense of humour and with a rapier wit at times . He is casually excellent at his job .
We see a lot more of Siobhan in this book then we ever did before and I really liked that . She is a very likeable character and I would love to see her more centrally in future plots .
I recommend this to all Rebus fans .

Black And Blue by Ian Rankin . Review

This was so good! Rebus has his hands full in this book with a copycat serial killer on the loose and the original Killer walking about paying close attention to this younger man . Crimes are stacking up and each one is more grizzly then the last while set amongst the city of Edinburgh . Rebus is in top form in this , the   eighth book in the series , there is a lot going on with the plot but it does not make it confusing , instead keeps you glued to the book until the very end . I love when a book does that! Rebus is his usual self , snarky and self confident and a bit of a loveable rogue. This is a must read for all fans of the series.

Time For A Catch Up :0)

Well friends , it has been an awfully long time since I popped on here to chat to you all so I thought today I would sit down and catch you up with what I have been up to . We have been SO lucky with the weather recently , honestly ..... if you squinted a bit you would think you were in some foreign country the way it has been so warm with  blue skies for days .

With the fab weather comes fab growth and even the weeds are enjoying every bit of it .... the buggers....  Weeding is my least favourite part of gardening , planting and planning are my favourite as well as pottering in the green house . Honestly there is little better then putting on an audiobook and getting my hands dirty planting some seeds that I will later be able to eat or to put in a flower pot .

I have been reading a good few review books recently and my personal reading has been left to the side .... I have a nice stack of books that I will be digging into very soon and I am honestly so excited! I picked books from lots of genres and the settings are very different for the most part . Half the fun of them now is knowing that they are there waiting for me . Bliss.

Sneezing season is back with vengeance again this year , each year I hope it will not come back but .... well , pass the tissues .
It does bring headaches watery eyes and sinus problems but sure it is all worth it for the sunnier warm days where you don't need a thermal vest and long johns to brave outside your door .

It hit over 50 degrees in my greenhouse on one of the hotter days , standing there it felt like I was melting into the floor , needless to say I made a hasty exit after opening windows . I am growing all the usual plants I grow each year , lettuce- multiple types, cauliflower , cabbage , broccoli ( two types) , Pak Choi , red and white Scallions , leeks , garlic , peppers , carrots( two kinds) cucumbers , courgettes ( two kinds ) onions , beetroot, sage, parsley , basil, garlic chives , regular chives and countless others. I do enjoy seeing them grow and each year no matter what it still excites me waiting for the first glimpse of green to pop out from under the soil. So satisfying!
I ordered lots of vegetable books from the library and tonight I intend to browse them and see if I can get some helpful tips. Gardening is a constant learning process but very rewarding and great fun when you meet other like minded people.

I have lots of reviews and a haul going up here on the blog this weekend and all of next week so expect a good few posts over the next week as I try and catch up on a backlog of posts that I have waiting for me . Until next time friends , have. a great Saturday :0)
