Our Song by Dani Atkins . Review

This is the story about two women who both find themselves in the intensive care unit of the hospital on the same night , both sitting in the relatives room there, both terrified ,and both knowing and disliking each other .
Each woman's partner is in a life threatening situation and an intense situation like that brings out all manner of emotions from the woodwork and for  these two enemies it's a boiling pot. The book begins in present day and then flashes back and forth to each of the characters lives , and how they met , giving us a a better idea of what each of them is actually like and how they are linked , and what their individual  stories really was . A touching and tearjerker story that is told beautifully. Read with tissues!

Behind Closed Doors by B.A Paris

Domestic abuse can be a difficult situation to understand but I think the author did an excellent job of showing how a normal woman can get fooled and pulled into a relationship with a domestic abuser. When these two characters , Grace and Jack first get together everything is wonderful, romantic and a dream come true. There are tiny glimpses of unusual behaviour before the wedding from Jack but nothing that you could say with certainty was wrong , just a feeling ,but it becomes clear very quickly that instincts should be listened to and quickly but it is not always easy when it is not just you in danger. Grace is such a smart strong character trying to retain her own self while this monster tries to break her and he wants to keep on hurting her , and not just her,  in every despicable way possible.
It has been a long time since I have hated a character as much as Jack , there are no words strong enough to cover how much I despise him or how important hope is.

In My Mailbox

In my mailbox today are these great sounding review books.
Gold Fame Citrus by Clare Vaye Watkins
Our Song by Dani Atkins
Coffin Road by Peter May

Maladapted by Richard Kurti . Review

When travelling one day on the train with his father Cillian's carriage is blown up causing mass destruction .Cillian is the only one who makes it out of there without any injuries. Tess was near by when the bomb went off and does her best to get far from the site and back to the members of her group .
In this dystopian world where a terror group that Tess is involved with is trying to kill those that are not doing what they agree with ,many lives seem destined to be lost. After the train explosion Cillian begins to learn a lot more about his father and the huge secrets that were kept from him . It becomes increasingly hard  for him to know who to trust and who is a very real threat  to him . This story was fast paced yet it takes a little while to understand the structure of this world Cillian is living in where technology is very advanced and terror threats are very real , science has made huge advances and not all of them are for the best. Very interesting read! I recommend adding this to your TBR list.

Off The Page by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer . Review

This is book two in the love story about Oliver and Delilah. I loved the first book so I could not wait to see what was going to happen to these characters now. The idea of characters coming to life really appealed to me especially the idea that they have their own life when the book is closed .  Delilah lives in the real world and Oliver lives in a book. Delilah first met  Oliver in book 1 but in this book we  meet them as they try to get Oliver out of the book and someone else in to replace him . This is full of complications , but they do find someone willing in the real world and he is Edgar. Edgar is going through life problems and stress and is more then happy to abandon his life and Oliver replaces him and carries on living in his house with his mum. It takes Oliver to notice that Edgar's mum is having a rough time too . This was a tearjerker , heartbreaker book filled with smiles and hope . I loved these characters so much , and especially a loyal little dog called Frump.

Not If I See You First by Eric Lindstrom . Review

This story is about a teenage girl called Parker Grant. Parker's parents are both dead , one of them only recently, she now has her aunt and cousins living with her and they are all adjusting  . Parker is blind , she was not born this way , it was due to an accident,  but she has grown pretty good at taking care of herself and is very independent . Trying to be brave while managing  school,  friendships ,and love becomes hard work . We get to see  accurately how much someone without sight has to manage their life and it made me care even more about Parker as my own grandad was blind ,  it reminded me of how he used to eat his dinner in a particular order and how he would joke that he could hear a mouse in the room if I did not announce myself when I came into the room. I really enjoyed this!

This is the story about a teenager called Alba. She lives behind the bakery and loves to draw comics and daydream about all the ones she wants to create. Her best friend since she was a kid is Grady , they have a sweet and funny friendship and their mums are pals too.
When an apocalypse is supposed to happen ,with their home town of Eden Valley at its core , a former friend of theirs comes back into town along with huge numbers of people expecting the end of the world. A lot is changing , some good and bad and with all of this happening they begin to question their futures , what they want and who they want it to be with. The Icarus Show by Sally Christie . Review

This is the story about a boy named Alex. Alex used to live next door to Don and Maisie but Don died and Maisie went into a home , then he got a new neighbour called Bogsy. Alex and Bogsy go to school together , but Bogsy is getting bullied there and Alex does not help him .
Their relationship changes one day when Alex receives a mysterious note and little by little it dawns on him who it is from.
My heart went out to Bogsy , reading about him being bullied and the lonliness that causes was heartbreaking, how he isolated himself to protect himself and what can come from this type of situation was even more terrifying. I loved Alex's elderly friend Maisie , who is a smart and loyal ally who helps these two boys understand each other better while also helping save them too. Loved this book.

Twenty Questions For Gloria by Martyn Bedford. Review

The begginning of this story starts at the end. What I mean by that is the story begins at a police station where Gloria is with her mother after being missing for weeks with a boy named Uman. These 15 year olds vanished and the police are trying to put together the time they were gone. Sad and touching , the story tells us about Uman's traggic family life and how he has suddenly come to be at Gloria's school . He is instantly a curious person because he has little regard for authority figures in the most respectful way possible. Gloria and Uman click and after learning more and more about him  she has this need to be there for him despite what she knows in her heart is wrong and not for the best. I really enjoyed this story , it was original , tender,  and thought provoking . I highly recommend this book!

Killing Ways by Alex Barclay . Review

When one by one the bodies of women are found dead with horrific atrocities done to them , Ren and her team are doing everything they can to find out who this monster is that is committing these heinous acts. The story had me horrified yet glued to the page as the tension built and the numbers of the dead rise , those investigating it are getting more stressed out and it all combined makes this a real adrenaline ride  . This killer manages to find new and more horrible ways to kill his victims making this book hard to put down as I needed to find out who he was and why he was doing it and what the officers were going to do to stop him! I loved how we gradually got insight into his past and how by the end it all came together to show us the complete story from his life as a child to adulthood.

Hour Of The Bees by Lindsay Eagar . Review

When 12 year old Carol is told she is spending her summer holidays at her grandpa's ranch in the middle of the Mexican desert she was more then a little unhappy with the arrangement. While there the weather is incredibly hot, her grandpa incredibly prickly and there is very little to do except babysit this man she has never met before as he is sick and whether he likes it or not he will have to leave here . During their time together they begin to form a bond mostly thanks to his love of telling stories about bees and if they came back so would the water that this area badly needed. Thought provoking and heartbreaking we learn about Serge's past and how much his home and roots meant to him .

After Anna by Alex Lake . Review

I read this book in one sitting ! The main character of the story is called Julie, she is married to Brian and they have a five year old daughter called Anna. When one day Julie is late picking her daughter up from school she gets news that every mother must fear , her daughter is missing . Brian and Julie are going through marriage troubles and this is putting a huge strain on an already rocky relationship . Terrified for their daughter they are both going through the strain of waiting and hoping and fearing  the worst. This book had me hooked very early. It's a tough situation to put characters in and the characters are flawed anyway and this brought out the worst in them . The pace is fast and the twists just stunned me . I could not believe what I was reading, I was glued to the page. It was incredibly good! I recommend this for anyone who enjoys thrillers.

A Company Of Swans by Eva Ibbotson

The story is set in Cambridge in 1912. The main character Harriet is a book loving adventurous person at heart who dreams about getting out into the world but the only life she is allowed to have is in the ballet where her family wish her to be. Stifled by her father and aunt she takes off on an adventure away from her family where she can do what she likes . I think the author captured well how dependant young women were in the early 1900's, they had few choices and their future was often led by family and not their own choice so it was inspiring seeing this young 19 year old go out into the world and meet people and have some fun and relationships in a completely different country . Harriet is a brave and very likeable character who was a lot of fun to read about having all these expierences away from the safety of home especially as her family wanted her back!

End Of A Project

Every autumn and winter like clockwork my head starts thinking patterns and coloured wool, this year was no different. The nights feel so long that the only way I can distract myself is to keep busy. That being said below is all the squares I completed for one of the blankets I am making. I never made a blanket like this type before so it was a lot of fun and a slightly bigger project then I first thought.
As I am making two of these, the first double knit and the second chunky knit , I never realised how much work was going to go into each one. With well over a hundred squares each it's a project of love !

So my question to you guys is what do you like to do as a hobby? Are you handy with a hook/ needles? Is reading the love of your life? Or perhaps journaling ? I would love to know what you guys do for fun and as always thanks for reading my blog and stopping by. Xxxxxxx

The Morning Gift by Eva Ibbotson . Review

Part historical fiction , part romance , this is the story about a young woman called Ruth at the time of the Nazi invasion into Vienna which is her home .  The story is set in Vienna and England and the main character Ruth has  been left in Vienna without her family in her home country as her family goes to England to flee the Nazi's as they fear for their life being Jewish. Her knight in shining armour appears in the form of a man called Quin who says he can get her to her family safely but it is not without many complications !
I enjoyed this book , Eva is a beautiful writer who can capture a city so well and make you feel like you are really there and you feel real empathy for her characters and their situations . A delightful book.

What I Know For Sure by Oprah Winfrey . Review

I love Oprah. I have done for years. She is like this cool aunt who explains things in a way that you can just get it! As she would say, a lightbulb moment. I was so excited when I heard about her book and was even more excited because she made an audible version which she narrates herself. I find her a soothing calm person to listen to and I respect her so much that listening to her talk made me " get her" even more. With a well known and respected television career it would be easy to think this would be overwhelming but after listening to this ,  oooh this lady has the smarts! From following your gut, taking care of yourself , making time , and getting rid of unnessary things from your life ,those are just a few of the many words of wisdom she has to offer and I would recommend this to any female no matter what her age . I am glad to have read it now but I wonder could it have had an even greater impact if I listened to this as a teenage girl growing up in rural Ireland. The advice is timeless ,no nonsense , and clear ,and by the time the book finished I had so many aha moments that I felt a sense of calm and understanding gentle ease in.
Get this book for yourself or any female friends you hold dear you won't regret it!

Wildflower by Drew Barrymore . Review

I listened to the audible version of this book by the awesome Drew Barrymore which is also narrated by Drew.
Drew is truly a breath of fresh air. I started reading this book one night with the intention of just listening to a few minutes before bed. Hours later there I am leaning my head on one hand as I listened to her describe her childhood , hopes , and dreams and I was loving every minute of it.
Drew does not shy away from describing the tougher parts of her life , good and bad like everyone's , some things seemed to stay with her through life and those were her optimism and sense of adventure . From her work life , to her family, friends and babies , she lives her life to the max , and listening to her gorgeous voice ( with the odd bit of cursing thrown in ) you imagine being her friend would be something very special . This is a lady who has packed a lot into her years and I can't wait to see what the future holds for this smart , funny business woman , mother and  wife. I just hope there will be many more books in that future!
