Beautiful Lissadell Opens Once Again. June 2014

When I read this week that Lissadell was re-opening I was very excited. I have been there many times down through the years but for the last five years the house and grounds were no longer available to the public due to a long running battle between Constance Cassidy and family and Sligo County Council about road access . The matter has now been resolved and the family this week welcomed the public once again. Me and two members of my family were thrilled to come here on the second day of opening where we were very pleased to see how well kept it was since our last visit just before it closed. Lissadell is beautiful inside and out and I hope the pictures below do it some justice. This house has a rich history and the poet W B Yeats was a visitor here and friend of previous family members. There was also strong political connections to the house that are well documented and if you have an interest in Irish history that you will find a huge amount to interest you here. From the house you can see Benbulben mountain in the distance and the shore on the opposite side. The grounds are impeccable and the staff are friendly and helpful and during the tour today we were happy to see Constance Cassidy pop in to say hello to our tour group. Well we could not be more made welcome then that! As you come in there are two galleries. W. B Yeats is honoured here in a gallery dedicated to him and his family as well as a gallery with detailed accounts of Irish Political history. This is a remarkable house that is well worth spending time visiting , after a few hours walking around why not visit the tea shop where the delicious tea and cakes and other light snacks will keep you going until you have finished your stay here. I will be visiting soon again and I hope you will too.
