It's a bank holiday this weekend in Ireland  and as we have had our fair share of snow ,sleet , hail ,and sunshine I thought it was best to plan indoor activities in the form of reading some fabulous books . That being said , here are the books I have chosen for this weekend . I have already started this first book , I am about half way through it and loving it.
The Sea Detective by Mark Douglas -Home
A Clue In The Stew by Connie Archer
Night Wanderers by C.J Flood

The Sea Detective by Mark Douglas-Home. Review

The story begins with an eye opening prologue where I instantly became interested in what was going to happen . This interest continued throughout the story . There is almost two stories going on here, the story of Cal's own family background in the past and secondly that of young girls traded in a dispicable business in present day. There were times it was hard to keep reading , but the need to know what the outcome was going to be kept me flying through the pages . I love stories about the sea and so the plot interested me , the maritime history and mysteries was fascinating . Cal is a pretty laid back and decent human being with unusual jobs , he is very likeable and I was rooting for him throughout the story . I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys thrillers, mysteries and maritime tales.

Braking For Bodies by Duffy Brown . Review

This is the second book in the wonderful Cycle Path Mystery series . This setting of the story takes place in June on the very scenic Mackinoc Island where the main character of the story Evie lives. Evie works in the bike shop on the island where she hires bikes out to the tourists.
For a small island there is no scarcity of comical characters and day dream inducing scenery discriptions . I love this series ! In this book the island is celebrating the Lilac festival so there are plenty of tourists about as well as a blast from the past  in the form of Fiona's old boss, the creepy peephole Perry. As well as the fun of the festival there is a sudden amount of extra drama that no one had planned for and its up to Evie, Fiona and Irish Donna to sort it all out! This was a gorgeous fun read , I love Irish Donna , she is a hoot! The entire story was the perfect escapist read. Now all I have to do is wait for the next awesome book in the series :0)

My Husbands Wife by Jane Corry. Review

This story is told in two ways , through the eyes of lawyer Lily and young Italian  girl Carla. The story begins with a case that Lily is working on , she is not keen on this part of her job , trying to find evidence to get inmates out of jail but she is professional and gets on with it. Carla lives near Lily and she and her glamourous mum have their own problems . These two women's lives are linked in ways I did not see coming and I literally did not put this book down until I finished it. Crime , love , loss , and violence surround the story and these characters are people you really want to know more about so this made for a very fun reading marathon in my house. I loved it !  It kept me guessing until the very end.

Outliers by Kimberley McCreight. Review

This YA book centres around a young female called Wylie. Wylie lives with her dad and brother and her mother has recently died. When Wylie gets a message one day from her troubled friend Cassie it sets in moron a string of incidents that will change Wylie's life and the way she thought of it forever .
This book had it all... mysterious road trip , missing friend, mental illness and lies , which is why I read this in one sitting . I had to know what was going on and who the bad guys were or if it was a figment of a young girls troubled imagination . Great read!

When I Was Invisible by Dorothy Koomson . Review

This is a story about two women who originally met at school . They have one very unusual thing in common , the very same name , but they go by Roni and Nika.  The story is an interesting one from the curious introduction of these two females to fast forward many years and both of their lives are very different . We learn early on something happened between the two women but we do not learn what until much later , I tried to guess judging by where they were in their lives in the present tense but I did not see it coming . This is an emotional read, when I finished the last page it felt like a big hole had been left inside me and it's rare a book will do that to me. The story covered topics like friendship, domestic abuse, homelessness and survival , and at the centre are these two friends with a unique bond that could not be broken. I recommend this to everyone ! Breathtaking!

The Butterfly Summer by Harriet Evans . Review

This is the story about a house and it's descendants , and it is told in two ways, in present day through Nina and in the past through her female relations . The main character of the story is Nina , and for a long time I was finding it hard to adjust to the time changes in the book but I got the hang of it and it started to make sense and became very intriguing. The house that the story is set around is Keepsake house and it holds many secrets and heartbreak and is passed down from generation to generation , each one having their own troubles .
This was a remarkable story of forbidden love, heartbreak and the strength of women . I recommend this to anyone , it is a very enjoyable  read , perfect to gobble up in one sitting .

The Bombs That Brought Us Together by Brian Conaghan. Review

The main character of the story is a 14 year old boy called Charlie .Charlie lives in little town which borders the notorious Old Country where the rules are very different then where he lives. When a new family move to Charlie's town he makes friends with the son Pavel , or Pav as his friends call him. Not everyone is as welcoming to Pav as Charlie is and it's not long before Pav is getting a hard time . I really enjoyed this story about this dystopian world .  The  book also covered topics such as  friendship , bullying and survival in hard times . I would recommend this to fans of dystopian books or if you like books about friendship and bullying.

Unrivalled by Alyson Noël . Review

When I got the chance to read this I jumped at the chance as I had previously read books by the author and really enjoyed them. This book is set in the sunny glamourous LA. The main characters are Madison , Layla, Aster, and Tommy , each person has their own hopes and dreams and this is the very town in which to make things happen , but there is a darker side to it . In a world where glamour and celebrity are all that some people want there is plenty of steep competition and not everyone is as nice as they seem . This was a fun read , the setting was perfect for the plot and the characters feel like they are only beginning to show us how devious and fun they can be , add a mystery to the mix and this made it a great read .

Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz . Review

This is the story about a man named Evan , he started his life in a most unusual way and now as an adult he has become a gun for hire with an extremely high success rate. Highly trained and almost invisible this man takes what he does very seriously. You do not want this guy after you! He is a bit of a knight in shining armour for the right people but you don't want to be on this guys bad side . After attempting to help someone in need things in his life become infinitely more complicated and this is when the action is kicked up a notch and as a reader the adrenaline starts to pump.
I really liked Evan , his past,  and his whole hero persona is admirable and you can't help but want him to do well. I was rooting for him throughout the entire book. I loved this !

Whisper To Me by Nick Lake . Review

This is the story about a girl called Cassie who has the misfortune to come across something very unpleasant when out at the beach. This sets in motion some very disturbing things in Cassie's life and for a while as a reader I was not sure if she was having a mental breakdown or if this was something much darker going on.
I liked the mystery in the story , it keeps you on your toes and you are not quite sure what is going to happen for the longest time which makes this fun.
The story is a memorable one and I recommend this to all YA readers or basically anyone who likes a mystery.

Alone by D.J Brazier . Review

This is the story about what happens with  a young boy when the plane he is in crashes and he has to survive on an island on his own .
The book is filled with adventure, danger , survival skills , and a young boy with a strong will to live. What surprised me most was that I had tears in my eyes reading parts of this , the author captured some real tender moments between human and animal that really brought home to me how important it was for connection between other living souls . The scenes in the book with with this young boy and Galaxy gave me a lump in my throat. Amazing book !

Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld . Review

This is the awesome story of Pride and Prejudice told in current day Cincinnati. When urged to come home from New York by their demanding mother Mrs Bennet's daughters find there is a new man in the area and their mother has high hopes for one of them to date this wealthy man. Bingley is a doctor / reality TV star and Darcy is a neurosurgeon . I loved this book ! I am a huge fan of the original , and seeing this modern day take of the story just goes to show that no matter how much time goes by it is ageless. This is a must read for all Pride and Prejudice fans .

The Summer Before The War by Helen Simonson. Review

This is the story about a woman called Beatrice who moves to a new village to teach children. The idea is frowned upon by locals as they seem to believe only men with a temper can control children , but they have not met this lady!
Welcomed to the area by local woman Agatha and her nephew Hugh and Daniel it's not long before she makes an impression and begins to fit in the small community . This was a gorgeous story , if sometimes a little heartbreaking , seeing the changes in circumstances for women then compared to now is jaw dropping and a relief but seeing the agelessness of kindness to those who most need it made this a real feel good story. These characters were very likeable , Agatha ,Beatrice and Snout were my favourites but really they were all terrific .
I recommend this to anyone who loves books set around war time or if you just want a really good story . I did not want this to end.

A Life Discarded by Alexander Masters

When the author comes across 148 diaries in a skip with no name indicating who they belong to he takes them home and begins the long journey of reading these journals and searching for their owner. This was a fascinating read as j think people are curious about people and especially through journal form . The authors experience in reading through them was interesting, the insight he got to this person and the secrets he unveiled and how they made him feel .
I really enjoyed this unusual book ,it was an undertaking done with much love for what he was doing . I recommend this to everyone.
