How To Find Love In A Bookshop by Veronica Henry. Review

When I got the chance to read this review book I was so excited as I love this author , and the title made me so excited!
The story flits back and forth in time with Julius in the past and his daughter Emilia in the future . The bookshop her father opened is now being run by her.
You get the impression very early on how great a guy Julius was , he was one of those special humans that the world is made better because they are in it.
Emilia has a lot of her fathers traits and he passed on to her his love of books and an appreciation for good stories .
This book is perfect for those who love books about books , it made me realise again just how much I love them and great stories . Family, friendships and set in a bookshop , what more could you want from a story . Loved this!

The Fire Child by S.K Tremayne. Review

The writing in this book is beautiful and the plot is haunting , if you loved Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier then I think you will really like this book . The story begins with a fairly new marriage and a large country house in Cornwall with a tragic past. The main narrator is Rachel she is the second wife of David who's ancestors owned the grand house they live in . David has a child called Jamie that belonged to him and his deceased wife Nina who's name is still frequently used in day to day life . Although we never meet Nina while she is alive in the story it almost feels like she has the most presence in it, her life and personality made such an impression that she is almost still alive and the large oppressive house almost has a pulse too.
Rachel has quite a private past so when we learn more about her it makes her an unreliable narrator , you just don't know how much to trust what she is seeing and hearing. The handsome enigmatic David feels very dangerous and I did not know just how much to be wary of him from the beginning as something seemed very off. When I read Jamie's scenes I felt very uneasy . The entire story left me jittery and uncomfortable , I finished this in one sitting as I had to know what on earth happened here and what was going to happen , there was so many secrets that is was a very moreish read. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Changes And Some Other Things I don't Like

As you know from the title of my blog it mentions beauty .... As you may also have noticed beauty products and talk of skin care have been lacking in my blog as well as my weekly catch ups that I used to have with you . So much has happened / changed with me health wise that I am at a crossroads right now .
I should probably explain a little bit about what I mean.
With health and my personal life both struggling now I am trying to keep my head above water,  and I am struggling .

All of this started in 2014. I noticed mild burning when I would wear makeup and nail polish then when I got pregnant towards the end of that year it got a lot worse almost as soon as I got pregnant.
I became wary of putting any of these products on that I had previously loved. I have always been a girly girl and so these changes really effected me but I did not know what was causing the reactions on my skin that I was feeling. When I began to have reactions to Medications I had previously taken too then I was even more worried which really added to my stress levels ,rising blood pressure and panic attacks and general anxiety on a daily basis. Trips to the doctor and hospital became more frequent and I became a lot more aware about what would touch my skin , and be brought into my home ( like paint)  etc.
I then had tests in hospital done and they were at least able to give me some results , I was allergic to Epoxy Resin, Nickel and E223 , these things are in a huge amount of things including food , drink , medications , skincare , makeup, hair dye , nail polish and basically a lot of stuff I come into contact on a daily basis .

I am going to leave out the medications I can no longer take that I react to now. Let's just stick with this for now.

I have had depression before on and off and I try to manage it as best I can , remembering mediation, exercise, regular sleep and meal times and trying to include fun things but when I am depressed the things I love most I tend to not be able to do like watching a movie or remembering things like to sleep etc .
With hugh levels of stress, and migraines now every week , crippling tiredness ...this week was particularly bad. I try and make the best of having this bloody illness but at times I struggle with it. It's a lonely isolating illness . I am quite a shy person anyway but I love to talk with people and I love hearing about their lives but when things are bad with me I dissapear to protect myself or maybe it is to hide how bad I feel . Some days just running a brush through my hair or cooking a meal or even eating one is hard going . I wish for less of those days, and for peace from all the worries,  and the things I have no control over.
When it's like this it is harder to verbalise how I feel and what's going on , making it harder on anyone trying to help.
So now I am trying to put things in my empty bathroom cabinets that my skin will except so that I can get some of the fun back that I used to have with the cosmetic fun side to being female. The depression will run its course or do whatever it likes as it tends to do and I will do my best to get up every day , run a brush through my hair , look at my books and just get through each day in one piece when most of the time all I want to do is cry.
I am sorry this post is a bit of a downer but I thought I needed to talk to you about why my life and beauty posts had been MIA for a while now and hopefully when I have a better understanding of it all and or I am in a better head space I will back to you again in a cheerier position from this sunny corner of the north west coast of Ireland .

Baby Doll by Hollie Overton . Review

As soon as I started this book I was immediately thrown into the action and the adrenaline was pumping , a sense of urgency got me straight away. Lily was abducted as a teen and had a child by that person . Kept captive for many years she gets free one day after her captor is unusually forgetful .
This story fills you with all the emotions you would want from a book, excitement, hope, love, family bonds and the most basic instinct,  to survive .
The author was excellent at creating the urgency you would imagine a crime like that would create when a missing person returns and they know their kidnapper . Then there is all the aftermath that a crime like that causes .
Terrifying and impossible to put down. Lily is a very likeable character and along with her twin sister Abby these two women ooze gumption . A must read book! Add this to your summer reading list.

Silence Is Goldfish by Annabel Pitcher . Review

When Tess Turner unexpectantly comes across really important information about her life one day by accident on someone's computer it completely alters how she sees those around her and herself.
This was often heartbreaking to read how much effect what Tess found out had on her mental health and then the coping strategies she used to care for herself in the aftermath , almost with childlike innocence. I think the importance of being open with children stood out in the story . It really was a book that stays with you after you finish reading it . Terrific!

Remember My Name by Abbey Clancy. Review

When Jess is saved by a handsome man when she takes a tumble she soon finds out he has big dreams for her . Moving from her home town of Liverpool to the bright lights of London Jess is thrown into the entertainment industry in the most unlikely way . At first things are not quite as she expected but then one act of kindness leads her to the most unexpected places . This was a lovely read and Jess is a very likeable character , you really want her to do well. There is many laugh out loud moments in the book that had me giggling in public . If you like books about starting new things and life changes as well as friendship and  your roots then this is the book for you .

Remade by Alex Scarrow . Review

Leon and his sister Grace move with their mum from America to England after their father cheated on their mother so she decides to take her kids back to her home country . When one day on the news Leon overhears a broadcaster talking about a virus that is spreading in Africa he has no idea what terror is about to attack the world in the form of an airborne virus causing death quicker then any virus seen before .
This was an adrenaline pumping story about a young family running from a virus that they know very little about and those they meet along the way. Terrifying and thought provoking and guaranteed to keep you up at night reading to the very last page !

Florence Grace by Tracy Rees . Review

This story starts in the wilds of Cornwall and the main character is a young woman called Florrie and she has a very special gift . An orphan livjng with her grandmother she unexpectantly moves to London , this country girls life meets many big changes and family she did not know before and it comes with its own ups and downs . This book had it all , a charming narrator, great settings , a wealthy family and a cruel man at the head of them all, forbidden love and family secrets . I really could not get enough of this story set in the 1800's . This book far exceeded my expectations and I did not want this story to end.

The Book Of Pearl by Timothée De Fombelle. Review

I have to start  this review with some gushing about the cover of this book. It is beautiful and really manages to capture the story inside with the pretty details on the covers. The story is set in a magical world of fairies and the real world , it flits back and forth between the two throughout the story. The story centres around one fairy who is banished from this magical world and goes to live in the human world . Taken in by humans and raised like their own his life carries on with them in Paris but he does not forget where he came from and neither does his love . This is a sweet and tender story for all fans of a love story with a magical element to it.

Children Of Icarus by Caighlan Smith

This is a dystopian story about a young girl who is selected to be an angel . While this is seen as a blessing in her community she dreads what it actually means which is leaving her family for good and going into the unknown  . Away from her family and thrown amidst the terror and chaos of this new life she finds it hard to adjust to the constant hardship and daily terror . Daily struggles increase when a misunderstanding leads to brutal treatment from those she felt close to. This is an often brutal story with violence and cruelty , I had  moments of shock reading it and at other times my eyes were stinging from the tenderness in the story . I recommend this to all dystopian or fans of Greek legends .

Don't You Cry by Mary Kubica Blog Tour

This is an awesome story! Below is my review as well as all the info you need to find out more about the author.

This was a mixture of mystery and unease . The main characters are Quinn telling us one part of the story and Alex telling us another . When Quinn leaves her friend alone in their apartment when she goes out one night when she returns her friend is missing and Quinn immediately feels something is wrong . Not too far away is a young man called Alex who encounters a beautiful young woman and he is completely entranced by her. It's not apparent straight away what's going on , in fact the book keeps you guessing for a long time making the mystery all the more sweeter when you get all the answers . This is one of those books you think of long after you finish reading it.

Blog Tour Unrivalled by Alyson Noël

THE NOVEL

“For a city that feeds off youth and beauty, Hollywood Boulevard more closely resembles a former screen siren who’s seen better days. The incessant sunshine is a harsh and brutal companion, intent on magnifying every wrinkle, every age spot. Yet for those who know where to look (and those fortunate enough to boast a spot on the guest list), it’s also serves as an oasis of the city’s hottest nightclubs—a sort of hedonistic haven for the young, fabulous, and rich. For Madison Brooks, the boulevard was everything she’d dreamed it would be.”

Unrivalled is the first in a thrilling new suspense trilogy following three very different teens who all find themselves with a VIP invite to the glamorous and gritty world of Los Angeles’s nightlife. They are lured into a high-stakes nightclub competition where Hollywood “It Girl” Madison Brooks is the target. But just as their wildest dreams begin to gleam like stars through the California smog, Madison Brooks goes missing and all of their hopes are blacked out in the haze of their lies. With Unrivalled, Alyson Noël skilfully reveals the way our most desperate dreams can become our darkest nightmares.

.............My Review...........

When I got the chance to read this review book I jumped at the chance as I had previously read books by the author and really enjoyed them. This book is set in sunny glamourous LA. The main characters are Madison , Layla, Aster, and Tommy .  Each person has their own hopes and dreams and this is the very town in which to make things happen , but there is a darker side to it . In a world where glamour and celebrity are all that some people want there is plenty of steep competition and not everyone is as nice as they seem . This was a fun read , the setting was perfect for the plot and the characters feel like they are only beginning to show us how devious and fun they can be , add a mystery to the mix and this made it a great read .

I received this for review from the lovely people over at Mira Ink/Harlequin / HarperCollins Publishers.

The Museum Of You by Carys Bray. Review.

This is the story about a girl called Clover and her dad . Growing up without a mum  is hard , especially being a girl and going through girl problems.  Clover's interest in her mother and her own arrival into the world really intensify's over the duration of the story . We see the story from the prospective of Clover's parents when she was a baby giving us a better idea of what was going on that Clover did not know. The story is also told in present day . I really liked Clover's dad , he was doing his best with his daughter and really was to be admired even if all the the things he did were not the wisest  . The quirky neighbours, friends and family all made this book very hard to finish as I did not want it to end. I wanted this to continue as it is a gorgeous feel good book that gives you all the feels.
Funny and sad in equal measures this is a story to take your time over and get to know these wonderful characters and this special story about family,  love, and loss .

The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry . Review

The story begins with the death of Michael Seaborne , he leaves behind his son Francis and wife Cora. Cora is an unusual woman who is a keen naturalist which is unusual for the times she is living in. After the passing of her husband she leaves London and moves to Essex . Before her husband died , his doctor , Luke "The Imp " Garrett carried out house calls to them , then , after Michaels death a friendship develops between the two , and for one of them it has more meaning and so they keep in contact after her move through letters .
I thought Cora was a great lead character, she went against tradition of that time to do as she pleased rather then what society expected of her. She had unconventional interests and friendships and lived her life to the full and was liked even more because of the honesty of it. She was true to herself and it was impossible not to admire that about her . I recommend this to anyone who likes a rebellious female lead character .

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson . Review

Having little privacy when your father is in politics is hard when you are trying to be a typical teenager with all that goes with that. When your mother has also recently died it makes it doubly hard .
Meet Andie , this is her life as the daughter of a famous congressman who is under the spotlight of a scandal . Andie has to be extra careful so as to not make the situation any worse for her dad at an already difficult  time . Andie is an independent young woman who has firm ideas about what she wants to do with her life so when everything in her life seems to alter quite quickly she has to alter with it.
This was such a great book ! Andie is an inspiring character who has had tough times to go through , but she still manages to grow with these changes rather then let them drag her down and hold her there. I thought her love interest in the book was really cute , he was pretty special and their scenes together were a lot of fun . Overall this was an awesome feel good story.

The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney . Review

This is the awesome story about the Plumb family , matriarch Francie, daughters Melody and Bea and sons Jack and Leo. When Francie's husband died leaving a nest egg for his children with specific instructions about when it is to be given out , no one could have foreseen the complications it would cause amongst the family . This was a fun read as you have this fairly well off family , each member has his or her own unique set of quirks , some good , some bad  and they all need to come together.
The two characters I loved to hate were Francie and her son Leo , I was eager to know where the plot was going to lead  in relation to him , he was a horror !
Overall this was a great story of a family going through the ups and downs of life and inheritance with a selfish egotistical brother at the centre of it all.

Nightwanderers by C.J Flood . Review

This is the story about two friends , Rosie and Ti . Ti is a twin and comes from a large Italian family that run a restaurant in the town . Ti and her sister Ophelia have got the reputation as being troublemakers and they don't exactly help themselves with their behaviour. Likeable Ti is the complete opposite of her short tempered sister , but that does not stop her getting into trouble. Rosie can see the good in her friend Ti but she fears for her friend and what is going to happen to her if she keeps letting her sister drag her down. Ophelia is a hard character to like, she is aggressive and manipulative and Rosie can see her clearly which her sister cannot leading these two friends to reach a crossroads in their friendship . I really enjoyed this book, the idea of friends meeting up at night to get up to harmless adventures in a town while the rest of the town sleeps is a great basis for this book, the characters were interesting even if I did not love them all 100%. Great book! Loved it!

The Hawkweed Prophecy by Irena Brignull . Review

This is the story about two girls who were both born at exactly the same time. One girl is brought up in a regular house with a regular family and the other girl is brought up in a coven of witches kept apart from modern society for the most part. Poppy is brought up with a dad and  mentally ill mother and Raven is brought up surrounded by women all belonging to the same coven . Poppy has an usual gift  that draws animals to her in a way she can't explain and she can move things without touching them , these unique gifts keep on growing .
When these two girls meet they are like kindred souls and no one could have predicted the connection they would have to one another  or what the outcome would be . This was like a fairy tale and modern story in one , the two main girls were likeable , especially Poppy. I recommend this to all YA fans who like their fiction with a bit of mystism.
