The Hangman's Song by James Oswald. Review.

The Hangman's Song by James Oswald is book three in the Inspector McLean series and I adored every single page of it. What starts off as an apparent suicide turns out to be something an awful lot darker and frightening. This was an awesome book and from the very beginning you jump right into the story. It was a real grab you from the start and pull you willingly though type of book.
The story is set in Edinburgh, which I enjoyed, setting a book in a real place is fun especially if you are familiar with it.
The main character Inspector McLean is a hard working, laid back, likeable character who's  job is tough going right now and who's personal life is a bit hit and miss. Between McLean's private life and his job there is plenty to keep you interested in the story.
I really liked McLean, the rest of the characters are just as interesting and enjoyable to read about too. My personal favourite was Grumpy Bob.
The crime scenes were very descriptive and I had no problems visualising what the author was trying to say plus the plot kept me wondering just how it was all going to come together at the end. The ending was smart and I did not see it coming. This book would easily motivate me to go find the other books in the series.

Mrs Palfey At The Claremont by Elizabeth Taylor. Review

This is the story of an older woman called Mrs Palfrey who has come to stay in the Claremont, this is a middle of the road hotel in London on the Cromwell Road.
Her room in the hotel is little to write home about but it has everything she needs and there are people there in a similar position as her, making her feel slightly less alone.
The hotel has a rather slow pace and it contains a few residents as well as the normal guests who come and go.

 A chance meeting with a young man called Ludovic Myers or Ludo for short quickly becomes a friendship that is cherished by both parties but by Mrs Palfrey in particular. It is a sweet relationship and it means a lot to Mrs Palfrey. You get the impression in the story that she has a very real need to reach out to someone before it comes to the end of her life. I did enjoy reading about all the characters and different personalities but there was  one character I really  did feel a lot of hatred for and he was called Desmond, when you read this book you will understand.What a louse!!!! 

The story is sad and touching and moved me to tears. Life is so fragile and reading this made that all the more real. There are many moments in this book that make you sit back and wonder what the future holds for you , how quickly is goes past and how it will all end. The story will leave you with a lump in the back of your throat. Loved it! Read with a tissue.

Zoo Station By David Downing. Review.

Zoo Station by David Downing is book 1 in the John Russell series .
The story is told in the run up to the war. It is 1939 and John Russell is in Berlin working as a news reporter for American and British papers. There are big changes happening there now and it is a worrying time for anyone who Hitler would disapprove off. John has a child and a girlfriend living there and I did feel sorry for them as he put himself in risky situations. I got a real sense of how tense it would have been living there at that time when war about to break out at any minute. John was a very brave character and you are rooting for him all the time. He is a good guy trying to make the best of a bad situation. The story flows steady throughout and finishes in a breath taking ending. Very satisfying! I would read more from this author after reading this book.

Is this not one of the best covers! Simple but striking.

The Silver Linings Playbook
This has interested me since I saw the trailer for the film(I have not seen that yet and I will probably wait  until I have read this book).

Inferno by Dan Brown(Book 4 in the Robert Langdon series) This has been getting great reviews. Lets hope it is as good as his previous books. I have high hopes.

The Husbands Secret is another book I have seen very often on Goodreads and Amazon and now I finally have my own copy. If you have read any of these books I would love to know what you think of them.

Rivers Of London by Ben Aaronovitch.Review.

I was only going to read a few pages of this before I went to bed as I had too many books already on the go that I had not finished. This book got me hook line and sinker.!!!!! 170 pages later I was still awake and holding my eyes open with matchsticks.(not really)(don't do that, that would be bad, no matter how much we love books).
So there I am thinking.... I will read just the first page and it went on from there. It's the characters I blame! They were sooooo good!!! I had been to London in the Summer and hearing mention of many of the places I had been to added a nice extra something special to my reading experience of the book. I bonded with the story quickly and all it's magical loveliness.
We all know there are lots to see and do in London but this was a magical look at London seen through a local persons eyes , that was awesome!
Policing in London took on a whole new look in this book where not everything is as it seems for all the members of the police force.. some members were extra special. .....
My Favourite character was the main character Peter. Peter is a likeable character trying to get ahead in his job in the police force  but things don't go exactly as he imagined they would and that's not a bad thing....Adventure and magic awaits ....
There is plenty going on in this book without it being overwhelming and I would say to set time aside to read this in one gulp.

Setting a book in London is genius as the city's past is so well known and its attractions now just keep people visiting it and loving it. If you are a fan of London then you might want to ckeck out this first book in this series.
