Woman Of State by Simon Berthon. Review

This is a fictional account of The Troubles in Northern Ireland in the early 90's and based primarily around two members of one family . Marie and Martin McCartney are brother and sister , Marie is young and in love with a friend of her brothers and after making a promise to him her life would alter for good .
The complicated and intense history of the troubles is described well as far as any fictional account can , adding a love story to the mix humanises this time in history while showing how many grey areas of this time there was . Marie's rise from young girl to womanhood and from Ireland to the UK was fascinating to watch , the intricate plot of what was going on around her was dazzlingly brilliant , friend or foe it became hard to know who to trust , the story keeps you guessing . Fantastic!

Reading This Week

Hi guys ! June is a great vegetable growing month at my house , courgettes are filling out and cabbages are expanding seemingly by the day , small heads of broccoli are peaking through and peas and broad beans are thriving , there has been all sorts of lettuce for months now and my herb patch is making me smile every time I have something tasty and fresh to add to meals . As I have started growing more then I ever grew before I thought it was advisable to get as much information as I could get my hands on and talk to as many others who enjoy the same pursuits .
Below is the library books I managed to get to help me on my growing journey of information and vegetables :0)

The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce . Review

This is an absolutely gorgeous story about a man , a street , and a love of music .
Frank is one of those characters who you almost instantly fall in love with , his empathy and big heart make him an irresistible lead character who just so happens to have a talent for knowing the perfect music for any person to suit their own situation no matter what it is . This gives him an almost central role in the group of misfits who also have businesses on the same street as him , people that seem a bit lost in life seem to find their way to him and one in particular puts a sparkle back in his eyes . I loved every page of this book , it's filled with great music titles and loveable quirky characters and a lovely nostalgic love of vinyl . Read this immediately folks , you won't be disappointed.

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter . Review

The story throws us into the action right at the beginning with a present day crime at a school  then the story goes back and forth in time showing us some of the main characters past . It took me a little while to get the hang of that but I loved it. I am a big fan of this author and she writes amazing crime scenes , it really has you on the edge of your seat rooting for the good guys , this book does that SO well! I loved the fierce strong Charlie and the history of her notorious family ... it was hauntingly good ! This is a must read for all Karin Slaughter fans.

Give Me The Child by Melanie McGrath . Review

This is a deeply disturbing story about a doctor and her family . Cat is happily married woman with a great husband and a child that is beautiful inside and out , then one night her whole life changes when a stranger shows up at her door . This was unnerving for a number of reasons , the secrets and lies , the layers of deception and the sheer evilness of some of the characters , this makes such good reading ! There is some awesome backstory here and that makes the present day story even more juicy . Add this to your TBR immediately ! Loved it!

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. Review

This was one of those stories that as soon as you finish reading it you instantly start recommending it to your friends because you know no matter what type of genre they are interested in they will really enjoy this . It was SO good , I just keep thinking back over it since I finished it . A teenage girl goes missing and someone knows what happened but they have their own sick intentions and reasons to keep her whereabouts secret . This story just kept upping the surprises and levels of which the sick of mind could lower themselves further . The story is told from the perspective of a few people and I loved that! Seeing the events from opposite sides of those involved was deeply disturbing and heartbreaking , my heart went out to Ellie and her mother , and I felt a certain amount of respect for Floyd who took an unusual situation and gave it a very satisfying conclusion . I loved this book! I can't praise it enough. Everyone should pick this one up and plan a late night reading session.

The Tough Times

These are the lovely books I am aiming to dip into this weekend . The last three are review books and the only difficulty I face is knowing which lovely one to begin with .

At times , life hands you lemons , this has been a week where life has done just that , and before I can find instruction to make lemonade I first have to find my way back up on to my feet , right now it feels like I need a roadmap to even find my way to that point . Books have always been my home in times of worry , stress , and uncertainty . This is one of those times . I need them to swallow me up completely until I can come out the other side of this or until the clouds lift . This is depression and it's scary and lonely and I feel lost . If you are reading this knowing exactly what I mean then I am glad you are still here reading this with me especially on the days it seems like the clouds will never part and the overwhelming smog suffocates you to the point you can hardly breathe . Today I am taking baby steps .... for today that has to be enough .

Rook by Anthony McGowan. Review

This is the third and final book in the trilogy featuring Kenny and Nicky . In this book the story begins with these brothers saving a bird from dying . There is such raw moments in the story that really grab at your heart but then these are later replaced by moments of pure hilarity with laugh out loud remarks that their father comes out with. The story contains issues like bullying , first love , disabilities and family relationships . The boys and father  are a small but very tight family unit , each has had their own troubles in life but together they are stronger . Inspiring and heartwarming and a must read for all younger readers and parents .
